The Bedford family descends from Thomas Bedford and Amanda Tanner. Thomas had one sister thatwe know of her name is Elizabeth. They were on the streets of Liverpool whentheir companion died. Since no one knew whom there, parents were they lived inan orphanage. Thomas joined the Merchant Marines as a cabin boy when he was approx.12. He sailed during his career in the Merchant Marines on the ship HMS Empress of Japan stationed out of Vancouver Canada. He met and married Amanda while in the Merchant Marines. Built by the Naval Construction & Armaments Co, Barrow, which became part of Vickers Armstrong Ltd, she was a 5,905 gross tonship, length 456ft x beam 51ft, clipper stem, two funnels, three masts, twin screw and a speed of 16 knots. There was accommodation for 160-1st class, 40-2ndclass and up to 700-steerage passengers, mainly Asian immigrants. She carrieda figurehead of a green and gold dragon, which together with the ship's bell isnow in the Vancouver Maritime Museum, while a replica of the figurehead is inStanley Park, Vancouver.

Launched on 13th Dec. 1890 by Lady Alice Stanley, daughter-in-law of the Governor-General of Canada, she sailed from Liverpool on11th April 1891 and arrived in Vancouver via Suez on 2nd June. Used on theVancouver - Japan -Hong Kong mail service until 1914 when she was fitted out as an Armed Auxiliaty Cruiser at Hong Kong. Returned to company service in 1916,and made her 315th and final Pacific crossing in 1922 arriving in Vancouver on18th July.
