3Poughkeepsie New Yorker, Vol. LXVII, No. 232, Adriance Memorial LIbrary, Market St., Poughkeepsie, NY. ""Ollivett, 31, First Traffic Victim of Year DeLaval Worker Crushed In His Automobile Edward Ollivett, 31, Pleasant Valley, was killed at 4:30 o'clock, yesterday afternoon when his 1936 coach was in collision in Dutchess turnpike with another vehicle near Mickey's tavern, west of Pleasant Valley. County Medical Examiner, Powell said and examination showed Mr. Ollivett died of a broken neck and crushed chest.* Charles Baartz, 50, Pleasant Valley painter, described by authorities as the operator of the second vehicle involved in Dutchess county's first highway fatal accident of 1949, was injured. He was taken to Vassar hospital and admitted after being attended for multiple abrasions, shock and contusions of the right shoulder. His condition at the hospital today was described as good. State Trooper John Hogan, South Millbrook, Under sheriff Crapser and Deputies Gardiner and Bassett investigated the accident, which occurred on the slippery snow covered highways. Trooper Hogan said Mr. Ollivett was on his way to his home from work at the DeLaval Separator plant, and Mr. Baartz was driving his 1941 sedan West in Dutchess turnpike at the time of the accident. Trooper Hogan said Mr. Baartz told authorities that Mr. Ollivett's coach skidded in the snow just before the cars collided. Trooper Hogan said that a river of a bread truck had told other persons that he witnessed the accident. The trooper said, the driver of the truck is not known, but authorities are anxious to consult him to obtain details of the accident. Hogan said that the only account of the mishap is the one given by Mr. Bart. Trooper Hagen said that the right front of the Bart car was smashed and the entire front of the Ollivett coach was damaged. When nearby resident and motorists reached the Ollivett car, they told authorities they found the driver pinned by the steering wheel and the dash board. Dr. George Ben vie, Pleasant Valley was called and he pronounced Mr. Ollivett dead. Private funeral services for Mr. Ollivett will be conducted at the Allen Funeral Home in Pleasant Valley, Monday. Fir ends may call at the funeral home tomorrow night. A native of this city, Mr. Ollivett had resided here until approximately 10 years ago. He was born July 15, 1917, the son of Mrs. Marguerite Cassedy Ollivett and the late Harry Ollivett. He was educated in local schools and employed at the DeLaval Separator Co., for a number of years. Surviving in addition to his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Vosburgh Ollivett: a daughter, Diane** Ollivett ; his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William C. Crosby, here; two brothers, Harry Crosby Ollivett and Warren Lloyd Ollivett, Pleasant Valley; and four sisters, Mrs. Hull G. Way, Jr. Pleasant Valley, Mrs. George DeLucas, Philadelphia, and Mrs. Burton Whitaker and Miss Jeannette Ollivett, here." * My father carried a large iron anvil in the trunk of his car to aid in the assent of the hill on Traver Road to reach our home there. ** My name is Diane Cassedy Ollivett, not Diana! I have always know in my heart that it was no accident, and with good reason, I doubt very much the veracity of the account of the other driver. My father's death was also my first memorable psychic experience, I knew before I started home that he was dead, I went out of body with him to the scene of the crash and witnessed the anguish of my Uncle Bing and though afraid to tell Mother what I had experienced, tried to prepare her for the horrible news that my Uncle Warren would soon bring. This record is for my cousins, Carol who was very young then and Karen who was not yet born when this happened. Your parents were my life support and salvation. Aunt Ann to talk to and cry on and Aunt Audrey to keep me occupied, playing with the new baby, piano and just being good company, like Aunt Ann.. And, dear cousins, you too played a great part in my recovery from Daddy's death, you were there to fuss over, play with and love. A love which you both returned to me many times over. Aunt Edith and Linda, you and Uncle Hull helped too as did Aunt Midgie and Uncle George who took me in while Mother went to school. I love you all, but it was Aunt Ann, Uncle Bing and Aunt Audrey and my friend Margie that were my day to day support and I thank God for all of you! Diane Cassedy Ollivett 1/19/2001."
