As a girl, her mother and s 2 CONC tep father in the custom of the times were often on European tours and she lived at the Susa 2 CONC n Morse School for girls when she developed a love for farming. (I also believe she told me t 2 CONC hat she was related to Susan). 2 CONT Grandmother's step-father drastically dissipated the family fortune, but there was enough o 2 CONC f her inheritance for Marguerite to purchase her own farm when she left college. She was a ve 2 CONC ry tiny woman like my Ollivett Aunts and me. Yet, she would hitch up the horses to a wagon a 2 CONC nd go into Poughkeepsie to pick up the supplies for the farm from Harry Ollivett's store. Au 2 CONC nt Hilda remembers his amazement at how this tiny left handed woman wrote and he said that i 2 CONC s why he married her! His children remember Harry's great sense of humor and he was a ver 2 CONC y handsome man. Looking at photos of Bing & Ed tell you what he looked like. 2 CONT When her husband went out of business (because he was too generous to actively pursue those w 2 CONC ho owed him money), they moved to the farm and when he subsequently became a semi-invalid, Ma 2 CONC rguerite supported her 7 children in what amounted to a sweat shop, a coat factory doing piec 2 CONC e work, she and the children tended the farm, Uncle Bing soon left school to seek work as i 2 CONC n his turn so did Ed to supplement the family income. All this from a woman who had been ten 2 CONC ded by servants in the true Victorian tradition, from childhood. She once remarked to me tha 2 CONC t many of her friends would just shed and drop their clothes at bed time to find them cleane 2 CONC d and properly stored when next wanted. " I at least placed them neatly on a chair." 2 CONT She had the skills of a gourmet chef and baked like an angel. She made all the wedding party 2 CONC 's dresses for her daughter's wedding with some assistance from daughter-in-law Dottie Vosbur 2 CONC gh Ollivett Lacy. Aunt Hilda's was 2 CONT a very wondrous beaded affair and Diane's flower girl dress was its exact duplicate except fo 2 CONC r the long train. I, Diane, actually got to do some of the hemming of Aunt Hilda's and Aun 2 CONC t Edith's dresses and some of the bead work. Mother and Grandmother taught me well. 2 CONT Marguerite and Dorothy worked together in the coat factory and that is how Marguerite's son E 2 CONC d and Dorothy met. 2 CONT Marguerite was fluent in French, Italian and Russian and Greek. She also read in other langu 2 CONC ages. She read Dr. Zhivago in the original Russian, translating as she went to Diane who wa 2 CONC s staying with her for a short time. 2 CONT A couple of years later we re-read the book together, and Grandmother would correct the trans 2 CONC lation as I read aloud from the English. 2 CONT She loved music, the violin being her favorite instrument, but she was very skilled on the pi 2 CONC ano. Son Warren kept her up to date with each advance in radio and record players. And her e 2 CONC venings after a days work in the factory, work until dark in her flower and vegetable garden 2 CONC , were spent listening to classical music and reading. 2 CONT She was also a proud member of the United Garment Workers of America and I suspect a rather a 2 CONC ctive participant in its early days. Yet the grandson of her former employer related to me h 2 CONC ow treasured she was by him and how fond her was of her. She did the hardest pieces with grea 2 CONC t expertise and ease. 2 CONT I, never owned a coat from a store until well into my teens. With seeing me maybe once a year 2 CONC , she would supply me a new winter coat, the finest of materials and workmanship in the mos 2 CONC t up to date styles. Her daughters where always beautifully dressed, also by their mother' 2 CONC s hand. 2 CONT I was double blessed because the sense of color and style and great ability as a seamstress w 2 CONC as shared by my mother. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 31 OCT 2008 3 TIME 03:20:39 0 @I11@ INDI 1 NAME Harry Crosby /OLLIVETT/ 2 GIVN Harry Crosby 2 SURN OLLIVETT 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 7 JAN 1915 2 PLAC New York State 2 SOUR @S11@ 2 SOUR @S10@ 3 DATA 4 TEXT "PLEASANT VALLEY - Harry C. Though invariabl 4 CONC y declining nominations for legislative or congressional positions, he has alwasy been willin 4 CONC g to promote the welfare of Newburgh ny accepting such positions as it has seemed best, in th 4 CONC e interest of the peopl, for him to fill. In 1862 he was elected District Attonrey of Orang 4 CONC e County, and continued in that position until 1865. In 1880 and 1881 he was elected Mayor o 4 CONC n the Democratic ticket, notwithstanding the fact that Newburgh usually gives a large Republi 4 CONC can majority. During his administration the Quassick Creek Bridge was built, the West Shor 4 CONC e Railraod was commenced, and the first steps were taken to perfect arrangements for the Cent 4 CONC ennial Celebration. 4 CONT From 1869 to 1883 Mr. Cassedy was in partnership with Chalres F. In 1874 he was made a member of the Board of education, and served o 4 CONC ne year as its President, declining nomination for a second term. 4 CONT Perhaps Mr. Casedy gained greater distinction through his connection with the West Shore Rail 4 CONC road than in any other enterprise with which he has been identified. He was attorney at New 4 CONC burgh for the North River ConstructionCompany, that built the West Shore Railroad. In behal 4 CONC f of the company his firm paid out about $7000,000 to procure the right of way through the c 4 CONC ity and immediate vicinity. He was local attorney for the West Shore, and afterward for th 4 CONC e receivers. In October, 1885, the court appointed him referee in the matter of the foreclos 4 CONC ure sale of the road, and in November of that year he sold the road at the Newburgh Court HOu 4 CONC se for $22,000,000, and distributed the proceeds among the creditors. It is worthyof note th 4 CONC at in making this distribution, he issued one check for $1,068,000, and three others for mor 4 CONC e than $500,000 each. Formerly he was local attorney for the Erie, and now holds a similar p 4 CONC osition with the West Shore and Wallkill Railroads. 4 CONT For many years Mr. Cassedy has been a Director of the Quassiak National Bank and is also it 4 CONC s attorney. His property interests in Newburgh and St. Paul are valuable and extensive. I 4 CONC n partnership with E. T. Skidmore, he bought the A. J. Downing property of ex-Mayor Carson i 4 CONC n 1889, and on a portion of this he erected a handsmoe residence for his family. In 1861 h 4 CONC e was united in marriage with Miss Margaret J. Drake, who was born in Ulster County and i 4 CONC s a daughter of Dr. Charles Drake, a prominent physcian of Newburgh ad at one time Clerk of O 4 CONC range County. They have two sons, William F. and Frank H., and borh were admitted to the ba 4 CONC r on the same day, the former being in partnership with his father, while the latter is engag 4 CONC ed in practice alone. It may with justice be said that no attorney in t 5 CONC he valley of the Hudson has displayed more profound knowledge of the law or keener discrimina 5 CONC tive qualities than the gentleman whose name introduces this sketch, and who is conceded to s 5 CONC tand among the leading members of the Bar in the state. With his son William F., he conduct 5 CONC s a large and remunerative general practice, extending into various courts. Since 1865 his of 5 CONC fices have been located on Third Street, where he occupies two floors, and he has one of th 5 CONC e most extensive law libraries in Orange County. In the neighboring county of Rockland, in th 5 CONC e town of Ramapo, the subject of this notices was born November 28, 1833. On the paternal sid 5 CONC e he is of Irish descent, his grandfather, Archibald Cassedy, who was born on the 21st of Nov 5 CONC ember, 1757, having emigrated from the North of Ireland about the time of the Revolution an 5 CONC d settled near Ramapo, where he engaged in farm pursuits. He possesd the indomitable industr 5 CONC y and moral principles characteristic of the Scotch-Irish, and became a prosperous agricultur 5 CONC ist. In religious belief he was a Presbyterian.
